The catch
Usage beyond the $30 is pay-as-you-go. As of Sept 1, 2026 Shared Endpoint tokens are billed from the first request and are not covered by the included credit. Cloud credits from AWS/GCP/Azure cannot be applied to Modal.

All gpu cloud →Modal for Startups — free GPU credit grant
Seed-to-Series A startups new to Modal can apply for a one-time grant of free GPU credits plus engineering support.
- Seed to Series A startups new to Modal that raised VC from a Modal partner fund or over $1M from any fund
- Catch: One-time grant per tier; you can't reapply once you receive credits. Exact dollar amounts are not published. Larger custom credits only for Series B+ or partner-VC companies.
Google Colab — free GPUs and TPUs in the browser
Colab is free to use and includes access to GPUs and TPUs, though without a guaranteed allowance.
- Anyone with a Google account
- Catch: Free usage limits and hardware availability change dynamically, with no fixed allowance or guaranteed GPU model. Runtimes get disconnected; web-UI-style workloads (e.g. image-generation front ends) are restricted on the free tier.
Kaggle Notebooks — free GPU hours every week
Kaggle gives free NVIDIA P100 GPU time in notebooks, with a weekly quota of about 30 hours.
- Anyone with a Kaggle account
- ~30 hours/week, resets weekly
- Catch: The quota can change with demand. Sessions are time-limited, and the P100 does not speed up non-deep-learning workloads like pandas or scikit-learn.
Lightning AI — up to 80 free GPU hours to start
Lightning's free tier gives up to 80 GPU hours (from up to 30 free credits) plus one free 24/7 Studio, no card needed.
- Anyone with a Lightning AI account
- Free Studios restart every 4 hours
- Catch: Hours are 'up to' and vary with GPU price. Free Studios must be restarted every 4 hours. After the credits you pay per second.
